HENRI FAYOL’S UNIVERSAL PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS IN EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract

This paper examines the relevance and applicability of Henri Fayol’s universal principles of management to contemporary educational management in Nigeria, with particular emphasis on secondary school administration. Anchored in classical management theory, the study adopts a conceptual and contextual analysis approach to interrogate both the challenges and prospects associated with applying Fayol’s principles within Nigeria’s complex and evolving educational environment. The paper begins by clarifying the concept of educational management through the perspectives of multiple scholars, highlighting its strategic and operational dimensions. Fayol’s classical management framework is then reviewed and critically adapted to Nigeria’s socio-political, cultural and institutional realities. Six context-responsive principles accountability and transparency, participatory leadership, equity and inclusiveness, flexibility and adaptability, professional development, and community involvement are identified and examined in detail. Drawing extensively on illustrations from secondary school administration, the paper demonstrates how these principles can enhance administrative efficiency, ethical leadership, staff motivation and institutional effectiveness. The analysis reveals that bureaucratic rigidity, inadequate funding, weak accountability mechanisms and limited professional capacity constrain effective implementation. Nevertheless, the paper argues that deliberate contextual adaptation of Fayol’s principles presents significant prospects for strengthening educational governance and improving learning outcomes in Nigeria. The study contributes to educational management literature by bridging classical management theory with contemporary Nigerian practice and offers practical insights for policymakers, school administrators and educational planners.
