EFFECTS OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS OF PUBLIC JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This study examined effects of parental involvement on students’ academic achievement in public junior secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. The primary objective was to assess the extent of parental engagement in their children’s education and to explore how parents’ involvement, education, and occupational status impact students’ academic achievement. Three research questions and corresponding hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 significance level using a sample size of fifty respondents from six public schools. To assess the instrument reliability, a test-retest method was utilized and a reliability index of 0.89 was obtain using Pearson correlation coefficient formula. The findings revealed strong positive correlation between parents’ involvement, educational level of parents, occupational status of parents and students’ academic achievement. Further regression analysis revealed that an increase in parents’ involvement is associated with increase in students’ academic achievements. Additionally, the regression analysis also revealed that the educational attainment of parents as well as parents’ occupations contribute to students’ academic achievements. Accordingly, it is recommended that parents should intensify their participation in their children’s educational endeavors, while schools and governmental agencies should implement programs that promote and facilitate parental engagement in their children academic pursuits.
