STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' PERFORMANCE IN ORAL ENGLISH IN NSUKKA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Abstract


This study focused on strategies for improving senior secondary school students' performance in oral English in Nsukka Local Government Area.  Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study.  The population of the study is 4,420 SS II students in the 32 public secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area, while the sample size of the study is 320 students; comprising 10 SSII students chosen from each school using simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire, which was developed by the researcher, was used as instrument for data collection. Two experts in department of Arts Education, and one expert in the in department of Science Education, in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka validated the instrument.  The instrument yielded a reliability index of 0.81.  Data analysis was carried out using mean and standard deviation.  Findings reveal that drill and class discussion have positive impact on senior secondary school students’ performance in oral English. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that teachers should incorporate drills in the teaching of oral English, and that schools should encourage regular class discussions as a vital strategy for improving students' oral English performance.
