PROBLEMS OF READING IGBO PROSE FICTION AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN IMO STATE

Abstract


This study examined the problems of reading Igbo prose fiction among secondary school students in Imo state. Reading is a process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them. It is a receptive skill because, through it, one receives information. Igbo prose are those novels, short stories or novella that are written in Igbo language. Many students in secondary school in Imo state find it difficult to read Igbo prose, because they lack a firm foundation in the skill of Igbo language. This made it difficult for them to pass Igbo literature especially in an external examination. This is a survey research. Findings revealed the  meaning of reading, meaning of Igbo prose ,the two  early Igbo novels and their authors,  Igbo literature and the teaching materials, different methods of reading Igbo prose by the students, basic skills development in reading   Igbo prose, factors  affecting reading  Igbo prose and ways of improving reading Igbo prose  among secondary school students in Imo state. It was concluded that teachers should stop believing that reading is an active, progressive class skill which should be caught rather than taught. Parents should speak Igbo language at home. This will help the students to perform well in Igbo literature especially in an external examination.
