EMPOWERING NIGERIA THROUGH LANGUAGE-TECHNOLOGY FOR DIGITAL INCLUSION: A MULTILINGUAL APPROACH TO INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ACCESSIBILITY

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the convergence of language and technology emerges as a critical driver of societal advancement. This paper examines the role of language in shaping Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategies for digital inclusion in Nigeria, a nation characterized by its extensive linguistic diversity. Recognizing the transformative potential of technology in bridging socio-economic divides, this study explores how language technology can be leveraged to ensure inclusivity in the digital realm. With over 500 languages spoken across Nigeria, this diversity presents both challenges and opportunities for technology adoption. This paper using exploratory content analysis using secondary data source discusses the importance of developing language technologies that cater to Nigeria's linguistic diversity, ensuring that digital platforms and applications are accessible and meaningful to speakers of various languages. Additionally, it examines the impact of language technology on education, e-governance, and digital literacy initiatives, highlighting how leveraging native languages can enhance user engagement and comprehension. The potential of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine translation to break down language barriers and foster communication is explored as a means to bridge the digital divide.
