DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND DATA-DRIVEN MARKETING COMMUNICATION IN NIGERIA: OPPORTUNITIES, APPLICATIONS AND STRATEGIC CHALLENGES
Abstract
Digital transformation is reshaping marketing communication and public relations practices globally. Organizations are moving away from traditional methods such as print advertising, radio broadcasting, and mass messaging, and increasingly adopting data-driven digital platforms that enable more interactive and personalized communication. In Nigeria, this shift is driven by rising internet penetration, increased smartphone use, and expanding access to digital tools. This study examines how digital technologies influence marketing communication and public relations practices in Nigeria, focusing on customer engagement, personalization, audience targeting, and communication efficiency. It adopts a qualitative, secondary data approach using academic literature, industry reports, and empirical studies. The study explores tools such as customer analytics systems, automated messaging platforms, chat-based communication tools, and digital segmentation strategies. Findings show that digital transformation improves communication effectiveness by enhancing targeting, strengthening brand relationships, improving response time, and increasing customer satisfaction. Chaffey (2020) notes that digital tools help organizations deliver more relevant messages, while Adeola and Evans (2019) highlight their role in improving competitiveness in African economies. However, adoption in Nigeria is limited by poor infrastructure, lack of technical skills, high costs, weak regulation, and resistance to change, especially among SMEs (Afolayan & Ogundipe, 2021). The study concludes that although digital marketing communication is growing in Nigeria, its full potential remains unrealized. Stronger institutional support, investment in infrastructure, and capacity building are required for sustainable and inclusive adoption.
