AN APPRAISAL OF LIFE SKILLS COUNSELLING PROGRAMME ON RISKY SEXUAL BEHAVIOURS OF ADOLESCENTS IN FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ZARIA, KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract


Life-skills include having self-esteem and self-awareness, skills for critical thinking, communicating, negotiating, assertiveness, decision-making, taking responsibility, solving problems, coping with stress, emotion, empathy and interpersonal relationships. The paper examined to the menace of risky sexual behaviours among adolescents and the knowledge on what factors contribute to adolescent risky sexual behaviours in Federal College of Education, Zaria and the use of life skills counselling to prevent and in the reduction of risky sexual behaviour. It is suggested that Life skills training should take into account psychosocial competencies that help adolescents to take right decisions. In addition, parents and teachers need to warn the students the dangers of early and promiscuous sex, and adolescent pregnancy.
