IMPACT OF STAFF MOTIVATION ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ECONOMICS IN JOS NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract


This study assessed the impact of Staff Motivation on Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Economics in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The purpose of the study was to find out the causes and effects of poor staff motivation in Teaching Economics in secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The study raised two objectives and two research questions. A descriptive survey research design was used with a population of 52,670. The researchers used 169 and 382 teachers and students respectively for private schools in the study area. Multiple structured questionnaires with 12 item were validated by 2 experts in the fields of Economics Education and 1 expect in research measurement and evaluation. The data was analyzed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) version 25. Descriptive statistics of simple percentage and mean score. The result revealed the causes of Poor Staff Motivation in Schools as bad governance and deliberate government neglect among others. The effects of Poor Staff Motivation result to teachers not teaching as expected. There exists a significant relationship between staff motivation and academic performance of secondary school students in Economics. The researchers recommended that Employers of teachers and other educational stakeholders like heads of schools, educational administrators, and the government should ensure that teachers are well motivated.
