GIRL’S ABDUCTION AND FORCED MARRIAGE IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA: CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

Abstract


Today in Nigeria, the average good looking girl child is no longer safe. Young girls are being abducted at will and forced into marriage with their names and religion changed without any of their parents’ consent. This paper examined some of the cases of girl’s abduction and forced marriage in the recent history of Nigeria. The paper also highlighted the perceptions and positions of the family, the society, religion and the law on girl’s abduction and forced marriage. The paper also looks at the implications and strategies to curb these immoral vices in our society. The study adopted the descriptive design. It drew upon primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include oral information and testimonies. Newspapers and magazines reports were also used in conjunction with official records in Government publications. Secondary sources include relevant books. The researcher also made use of direct observation method. All the information gathered were subjected to historical examination.
