BODY IMAGE DISSATISFACTION AND PHYSICAL APPEARANCE RELATED COMPARISON AS CORRELATES OF SELF-ESTEEM AMONG FEMALE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, NIGERIA
Abstract
Body image contributes to our perception of self in the society. In view of this, the study examined the correlates of body image dissatisfaction and physical appearance related comparison on self-esteem among female undergraduate students, Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The study adopted a correlational research design to determine the relationship that exists among study variables. The study was made up of 238 sampled participants across 5 departments in the University. The instruments adopted for the study were Body Image Dissatisfaction Scale for Women (BID-W), Physical Appearance Related Comparison Scale-Revised (PARC-R) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Three hypotheses were tested and the result of hypothesis one indicated that there was a significant inverse relationship between BID and SES [r(230) = -.877, p < 0.05], indicating that the higher the BID, the lower the SES. The result of hypothesis 2 revealed that PARC had a significant negative relationship with SES among female undergraduate students [r(230) = -.303**, p < 0.01]. Lastly, the result of hypothesis 3 showed that BID and PARC had a significant main and interaction effects on SES [F(1,230)= 10.589; R2= .739; p<.05], [F(1,230)= 94.071; R2= .471; p<.05], and [F(2,229)= 85.895; R2= .991; P<.05] respectively. The study concluded that perception of female students about their body image and comparing their body with others, have an impact on their self-esteem. The study recommended that there should be a routine psychological assessment and an intervention based-research in which students who are having reduced self-esteem due to body image dissatisfaction and appearance related comparison would be psychologically helped.
