IMPACTS OF INTERVAL TRAINING PROGRAMME ON LEG POWER, AGILITY AND SPEED AMONG SOCCER PLAYERS OF UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

Abstract


To achieve a high level of performance in soccer, commitment to regular training is essential. It is important that Frequency, Intensity, Time, Types principle (FITT) be adopted when planning a training programme. In this study, it is important to examine the impacts of interval training programme (ITP) among soccer players leg power, agility and, speed performance. The study entails pretest, posttest, and control. Thirty soccer players of University of Ibadan participated in the study. Both groups went through the pre–training as well as the post training evaluation. Instruments used were stadiometer, weighing scale, stop watches and, cones. The experimental group was exposed to ITP while the control group was engaged with ball work. Descriptive statistics and Analysis of Covariance were employed. ITP had no significance on leg power (F(1,27)= .233; P<.05; η2=.009).Treatment of ITP had significance on the agility of soccer players (F(1,27)= 152.81; P<.05; η2=.850)with experimental group having a higher score than the control group. There was significance on soccer players speed performance (F(1,27)= 44.28; P<.05; η2=.621) with  higher score in the experimental than control group. Therefore, interval training programme should be adopted as a training modality to improve agility and soccer among soccer players.
